Preservation Hall Jazz Band with Tom Waits – “Tootie Ma Is a Big Fine Thing”

Hi!

CT here, presenting a bit of a departure for us here on Song of the Weak -a link to a youtube recording of “Tootie Ma Is a Big Fine Thing” by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band with Tom Waits, a track that’s been killing me for some time now, originally recorded some years ago in a much faster tempo by Danny Barker. We’re hoping to work this one up for our upcoming marching band performance at the Chatham 4th of July parade in a few weeks (which takes place in the morning! -jesus, canm you imagine a worse time to be doing something?!?)

Tom Waits’ singing has always struck me as a bit of an acquired taste (I much prefer pretty much everything else he does, i.e. his acting, string writing, interviews, excellent performance on “Fishing With John”, etc., etc.) but I have to admit he sounds wonderful on this one- not that you could wreck such a wondrous band track if you tried. My old friend Eddie Gorodetsky sent me this one, which was originally released as a 78 single, that in at least one edition came with a special Preservation Hall 78 rpm record player. Damn!
