Recorded Thursday, July 29th, on board the Viking Princess in Provincetown Harbor by The Valet.
We love doing these sunset cruises in P’town; sometimes, there’s only ten or twenty people, and we get to play without amplification, which is sort of a passion with us lately, and when you get to do that while floating gently in the waves with the motor off (which we do for about a third of each trip), it’s pretty heavenly. As proof, we submit this little bundle from last week. You’ll notice the vocal, among other things, getting louder and softer -that’s because we’re mostly moving around while we’re playing. You’ll also hear a lot of back and forth between us and our prey, I mean, audience, which isn’t at all unusual.
The songs:
1. “Things To You” -written by Terry Adams of NRBQ, and one we just love to play, and do so as often as we can.
2. “Graciously” -a scaled-down version of one of the tunes from the next album, a co-write with David “Davey Baby” Greenberger
3. “My Bonnie” -hard to beat this for gentle rolling on the waves; the official version is on “After She Left”. At the end, a pretty girl said “I love you” to me and asked if I minded that she said it. I love this job!!
4. “Suddenly Everything Is Different” -a cover of “Plotzlich Ist Alles Anders” by Stereo Total (you’ll find a full CTP version elsewhere on Song of the Weak, with a bit more information on this one), new this summer and a particular favorite of the band; you can hear the passengers reacting to the appearance of a dolphin at the end of this one, causing an immediate reprise.
5. “I’m Chandler’s Butterfly” -from CTP’s “Tarnation and Alastair Sims”; another good one for floating
6. “Dear Someone” – a cover of a tune off a Gillean Welch album called “Time (The Revelator)”. We’re still learning this one… more fine music for floating…
